As the plane prepared to land in this brown dry landscape, we were told that the Merida temperature was 97F. The warnings everyone had been giving me were clearly true. It was indeed mighty hot as we bundled our cases into the back of a taxi that charged us too much by my reckoning to whisk us the Hotel Caribe in the heart of Merida. It was a great hotel in a really excellent location (It was right next door to the local cinema). After settling in we went on a brief exploratory walk that took us to the very centre of the city. I didn't fully believe it was the centre at first. For a city of more than a million people it seemed remarkably unspectacular. Anyway we stopped in the main plaza and had a drink. Then we heard some military music and we followed the sound to what appeared to be a very visual flag ceremony.
